Forest & woodland
Lower plants specialist – year 2
£15,000 awarded
Scotland’s remnant rainforest is host to a number of highly threatened, including some unique, lichens & mosses. It currently covers only a fifth of the area where the conditions are suitable for it & even those small, often isolated, pockets face numerous threats including over-grazing, disease & non-native invasive species (especially rhododendron ponticum). The Alliance for Scotland’s rainforest (ASR) was established to help champion this little-known, highly endangered habitat. One of the key objectives of the ASR is to promote the conservation & restoration of the rainforest in ways which ensure the greatest protection & maximum capacity for the successful conservation of these endangered lower plants. This grant helps to provide access to the dedicated expertise & training required to meet that objective.
